Wonderful wrought iron (steel) footman (coachman) with bold cabriole legs with turned elements supporting the top.
Note how decorative it is with both pierced and external shapes (with a flyfot shape on top).
These were used to assist someone getting safely out of a horse-drawn coach as a step (which were about two or more feet off the ground).
Because they were all metal they were then used around the fireplace to keep a kettle warm near the fire, as stools and small tables.
