Superb George III Mahogany and Gilded Looking Glass

No. R16882

Superb George III mahogany and gilded looking glass with broken arch crest and cartouche finial.

This mirror is all in amazing original condition (including the mirror plate).

The plate is probably Vauxhall glass which is made by pouring the liquid glass in a metal tray and when cooled it is hand flattend by laboriously rubbing flat boards with a series of graduated grits (pumice) until flat and smooth - then the back is "silvered" with a tin mercury amalgum.

The beveled boarder is also hand done so when you pass your finger over it, it's hard to feel (as oposed to Victorian and later which is sharp).
