Staddle Stone

No. R17077

Unusually large 18th century English staddle stone.

Staddle stones were used under the sills of grain storage buildings.

This raised the building above the ground so that rats couldn't enter the storage.

These stones also held the storage above any water that might seep in.

Staddle stones were made of the local stone and the mushroom shapes are great garden accents.
