Neo-Gothic Gilt Bronze Pricket Candlesticks

No. R16617

Pair of large Neo-Gothic Gilt bronze Pricket candlesticks.  In the form of a cathedral spires showing architectural elements and tracery.   The base is tripartite mounted with kneeling angles.

These are fire gilded sticks.

Fire gilding is an early way of gilding difficult surfaces quickly.

Powdered gold is mixed with mercury until it is as thick as paint - it is then painted on the cleaned surface of the brass and then exposed to heat (mercury boils off at 675º) leaving just the gold adhered to the candlestick.
(This is pretty dangeous - one wiff and it's "mad as a hatter" !)
