George III Pedestal desk with rare harlequin-action superstructure with pigeonholes that rise from under a hinged panel by lead counterweights.
In the base it has two long drawers over pedestals fitted with three graduated cedar-lined drawers (cedar is only used in quite high-end furniture as much for it's lubrication as it's smell).
The “partner’s” side of the desk is paneled and has a 16” leaf (half of the top writing surface) that flips over and rests on extending lopers to extend the work surface and provide leg room. There is also an original iron arm that will attach to the flap to hold it vertical, hiding the back of the cubby holes when in the raised position.
The sides are made from amazing 38 1/2 “ single boards!
The base plinth has been restored, done most likely to raise knee room allowance. Knee hole dimensions are 20” wide by 24 3/4” high.
