English 16th Century Cast Bronze Cooking Cauldron

No. R16765

English 16th century cast bronze cooking cauldron in quite remarkable condition , retaining the full length of it’s feet.

These are “Post” cast so a real one should have visible “posts” around the body of the pot (like this one).

In early metal casting the problem when casting things that are over 180º is to be able to keep the inner and outer molds from touching during metal pouring (which is quite violent), so an early solution was to put small bits of bronze between the two molds so they wouldn’t touch (which would leave a hole).  The posts are usually square.
